THE BACKWATERS AND SPICE TOUR
A tour of Kerala including a 6 night cruise along the backwaters on a private houseboat *** plus

Kerala's geography combined with its strong culture provides a wonderful introduction to India and its people.
This cruise and tour offers the perfect opportunity to discover this very diverse Indian state, which is home to two national parks, ten wildlife sanctuaries and two bird sanctuaries, and is famous for its spices. During your cruise you will be able to disembark and visit local places of interest along the way as well as enjoying the passing rural scenes.

YOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1
Depart London Heathrow by air to Cochin.
DAY 2
Arrive Cochin Airport where you will be met by your driver and transferred to Kurmarakom. This transfer takes approximately two hours. You have a two night stay at Coconut Lagoon which is possibly the best known resort in Kerala. Built overlooking Vembanad Lake and accessed only by boat, accommodation is offered in private pool villas. Facilites include swimming pool, restaurant, bar, Ayureveda and Yoga Centre. The resort has strict environmental and ecological policies.
DAY 3
You are at leisure today. Simply relax, or enjoy the various activities offered by the hotel including bird watching, village walks, cookery demonstrations and cultural events.
DAY 4
This morning you are transferred to your houseboat. After an introduction to your crew you begin to cruise through big Vembanad Lake. At 13.00 hrs. anchor for lunch and then visit Muhamma to see coir making and village market. Continue cruising until 17.30 hrs. when the houseboat anchors for the night.
DAY 5
Begin cruising again after breakfast until reaching Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. After a visit to the sanctuary re-join the houseboat for lunch and then a visit to the coconut plantation. Later this afternoon cruise through the narrow Akkathara canal and then onward through Venattukadu before reaching Paruthivalavu where you anchor for the night.
DAY 6
Begin sailing again after breakfast.This morning there will be a visit to the Chavara Bhavan (a shrine) before sailing through the Kuttanangalam narrow canal. Anchor for lunch at 13.00 hrs. After lunch sail to Pulincunnoo where you will have a village walk and visit to St. Mary's Ferona Church. Anchor for the night.
DAY 7
This morning cruise through Pulincunnoo Puthen Thodu, past Kavalam and through Kidangara. Anchor for lunch at 13.00 hrs. and then continue sailing through Muttar, Neerattupuram. Anchor for the night.
DAY 8
This morning sail to Mannar where you visit the market famous for houseold utensils made of brass and copper. After lunch continue sailing to Thottappally where you can visit the beach. Anchor overnight.
DAY 9
Begin cruising after breakfast and then visit Karumadi Kuttan and Sreee Krisna Temple, Ambalappuzha, which is 3 kilometres from Karumadi by road. Return to the boat and after lunch begin cruising to Champakkulam where you will have a village walk. Anchor at Vembanadu Layal overnight.
DAY 10
At 9.00 hrs. the boat begins sailing to Alleppey where disembarkation will take palce at 10.00 hrs. You will be met by your driver and transferred to Thekkady, a small town just outside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Park gates. This transfer takes approximately four hours. Your hotel for the next three nights will be the Spice Village which offers accommodation in cottages based on the dwellings of the native tribes with roofs thatched with elephant grass. Facilities include restaurant, bar, swimming pool, Ayurvedic centre and eight acres of garden. The hotel often has cookery demonstrations and talks about the wildlife of Periyar.
DAY 11
This morning there will be a guided soft trek in the forest and in the afternoon a guided plantation visit where you will see pepper, allspice, cardamom and chilli being grown.
DAY 12
Today you are leisure in the hotel. Various activities are offered by the Local Forestry Department which can be booked and paid for locally.
DAY 13
Today after checking out of the Spice Village Hotel, transfer to Cochin and the Brunton Boatyard Hotel where you have a three night stay. This transfer takes approximately five hours. This stylish hotel has a wondeful position right on the water's edge and within walking distance of many places of tourist interest. It is built in the style of the early Dutch architecture. All twenty six bedrooms have a harbour view and are furnished in traditional Kerala style. Facilities include a swimming pool, choice of restaurants, private jetty and boat. This evening there will be a sunset harbour cruise.
DAY 14
Enjoy a half day guided tour of historic Cochin, the main trading centre for spices today.
DAY 15
Today you are at leisure. Explore Cochin at your own pace or relax at the hotel. This evening attend a Kathakali performance.
DAY 16
Return to Cochin Airport today for your return flight to London Heathrow.
